    Rebuilding an 1986 Dinky DK1

    So, my buddy and I rebuilding guitars. My buddy is probably the best guy I know at working on every facet of any guitar. So I picked up the 1986 DK1 body, for 50 bucks from some tweaker kid. Body is in great shape, but someone did this paint splatter cheese ball effect on it that makes it look like a CC Deville guitar or something. Its an HSS, and my plan is to fill the two single coils in, and just rig it for a single humbucker. Yes, this will probably take me a year to do it right. In the middle of wet sanding it now. Any ideas on what I should do for a neck? I like the old piranha inlays on some of the DKMGTs. I was also thinking about putting a custom flying v neck on it. Any ideas on what I should do about a neck, besides search ebay would be great! Thanks for any help.

    There wasn't a DK1 in 1986 and piranha inlays aren't 'old'...

      86 was the first year the dinky was produced. In my book piranha inlays are quite old in my book. The were introduced in 2002, which makes them 13 years old. What did you do for your birthday 13 years ago. I bet you have no idea, so I beg to differ with your inaccurate information.

        Depends on your definition of "old". A 12-year-old kid 8 years ago is now 20, so to him, it was "when I was a kid".

        Nothing against the OP, just saying it's a matter of perspective. 2005 was 10 years ago. 1995 was 20 years ago. We've got forumites who were not alive when my 1992 Collen Archtop Pro was made.


        But yeah, 1986 there was no DK1, it was just a Dinky, most likely a Dinky Strat (rounded body and horns, but still smaller, like Lynch's Bengal).

        However, you'll need to know what neck it originally had - 24 or 22 fret. That could be tricky for an '86, as there were no standardized production models.

        As well, a newer neck may not fit the pocket - it could either be too loose or too tight.

        Paint Splatter could have been factory as well. No loss if it's stripped.

          Post pictures. Anything 1986, may mean more to one of us in its current condition, than it will to anyone after you butcher it.

              Yep. No DK1 back the just a dinky. I've got 2 from '86 both have dots most boltons from back then did, but they were all built to order so you could get anything you were willing to pay for.

                Being an '86 body-only, it could also be a Charvel Model series body. Does it have an inkstamp in the trem cavity? Floyd or Kahler stud spacing, or top-mount Kahler with no rear trem cavity?

                  Actually, he's completely right and you're completely wrong. The DK1 H/S/S model wasn't around until like 1996.

                    The problem here is the "DK-1".

                    "DK-1" was the model designation when the USA production models (e.g. Soloist USA, Dinky USA, etc) became the USA Select line. Everything got a 2-letter and 1-number model name - SL-1, SL-2, KE-1, DK-1, WR-1, etc.

                    So while the "Dinky"-named model has been around since 1986, it was not named "DK-1" until 1996.

                    One on hand it's splitting hairs, but on the other, that hair is 10 years thick.
