  • Could you run a Bogner pedal through a power amp?

A friend of mine is selling his ENGL Poweramp E810 and I would love to try my Bogner Uberschall pedal and my Bogner red Ecstasy pedal with it. Problem is he lives about 1,300 miles away so I can't just run over there and try out the pedals first so I have no idea how they will work with that ENGL Poweramp. I know the E810 is pretty sweet so it would be very cool to finally have something to run these Bogner pedals through since none of my amps need them. The Bogner's are great pedals and I have heard of players using OD's and such with various Poweramps without a preamp so I wanted to ask you all if you think I should go for it or not?

It would just be Bogner pedal>ENGL Poweramp>cab

Yeah, why not? It will basically be just like a two-channel amp... distortion with the pedal on, clean tone when it's off.

the ONLY issue cold be if you were "channel switching" like toe just said, you have no "clean preamp". but if you were just using the 2 bogners for degrees of dirt, then yeah, it should work fine.
      GEAR:

some guitars...WITH STRINGS!!!! most of them have those sticks like on guitar hero....AWESOME!!!!

some amps...they have some glowing bottle like things in them...i think my amps do that modelling thing....COOL, huh?!?!?!

      and finally....

i have those little plastic "chips" used to hit the strings...WHOA!!!!

Well I can't tell if these Bogner pedals are overdrives or distortion pedals and I'm probably looking for issues when there are none and I've never owned a poweramp before, I've always owned heads and cabs, but I know that ENGL poweramp sounds amazing on its own. This video shows how good it sounds by itself.

I can't use the Uberschall or the Ecstasy pedals with my other amps because the Splawn Nitro, Bogner Twin Jet, and my Mesa Rec. don't need them but the Bogner pedals are really tone monsters, especially the red Ecstasy, they sound damn good, so I figure a nice poweramp from ENGL would be perfect with the Bogner pedals subbing in as a preamp and then finally alll my pedals will be in the lineup instead of being on the sidelines.

With my custom Jacksons, and Suhr's, right along with my ESP's and Bareknuckle pups, maxon OD's, delay's, and so on I'll have everything racked and connected with my midi board to tap dance around tone heaven so to speak. Since my band is just a bunch of speed metal/thrash freaks its like pick your favorite flavor of evil and cut me loose brothers. We tore through Troops of Doom the other day and the smile on our faces was simply priceless.

At any rate that's why I asked, as silly as it sounds. Winning that medical lawsuit spoiled the shit out of me with playing music. I'm just in over my head and I'm loving it.

I rarely use cleans. In fact I avoid them whenever I can unless my band makes me play them.

You can run those pedals through the FX Return or Poweramp In on your other amps (if they have them) and bypass the preamps. Basically the same as running straight into a poweramp, because you are running straight into a poweramp.

Well, you can use any distortion pedal with any amp as an OD pedal, really. Pat O'Brien from Cannibal Corpse uses a Boss Metal Zone into his Triple Rectos... level all the way up, distortion off, high and low at about 10 o'clock, middle and para mid frequency control about 10 o'clock. Pretty fucking brutal!

Yeah but my amps don't need them or rather they sound better with those Maxon OD's I have in front. I didn't know that about Pat O'Brien though. I use the Maxon OD820 with the Nitro and my Maxon OD808X (the new one) with my TJ.

I am dying to see what a ENGL poweramp sounds like with one of those Bogner pedals. Do you guys think I should get the E840 (50 watts, 5881 tubes) instead of the E810 (20 watts, EL84 tubes) just for band situations? Or woulld the 20 watt hold up just fine?

So the guitar plugs in to the "in" jack on the pedal and the send goes to the return on the amp? Do I have that right?
