  • Cygnus Orphus 30 watt

Fired this one up tonight in honor of the builder Kevin Knapp AKA Cygnus X1 from these boards.
I really miss our talks on the phone late at night.Such a cool down home kind of guy willing to help anyone.
R.I.P my friend you built me one sweet amp and I'm proud to own it.

That is very cool. Cygnus was a very cool cat, and always ready to help someone out and share his knowledge. Cyg is sorely missed.

On another forum I saw a young member with a CygnusX1 handle and immediately thought of Kevin.

I am getting close to finding the time for building my own. My 15 year old son is into hi-fi and wants to build a tube amp.

A neighbor put out by the curb two 1950's powered monitors his grandfather had made, Very 50's looking with two small legs in front and one in the back. A 12", 6x9, and a 4" tweeter. Each had it's own 15 watt amp inside - 12AU7, 2 EL84's and a 5Y3 rectifier. I asked the neighbor if I could rescue them and he said no problem.

My son and I added new power cords (one was crispy from a short) and a fuse for safety. We added a 1/4" jack for inputs, and plan to add RCA jacks as well. They both powered up nicely. He ran his iPod through them in stereo playing Mozart LOL!

Cool find Don I love old stuff like that.
I have a 1930's Coronado chair side tube radio I picked up at Goodwill for $20.00.
All the old tubes were still in it and it powered up just fine.
Wouldn't pull any stations in so I took the chassis out and shot some compressed air thru the tuning fins and now it pulls in AM stations from all over the country.
All it needs is a grounded power cord for safety reasons.

I have fixed all the scratches and polished it up since this pic.
