  • Jackson Kelly 7-strin custom shop

    Hey!

I'm interested in buying this guitar from Jackson Custom shop. The current owner says it's from 1998 and is their first custom shop model with bolt-on neck.

The only thing i feel is a bit strange is that is has an Ibanez tremolo. Owner said that this is some sort of prototype and they put a Ibz tremolo on it in the Jackson factory. Anyone knows why Jackson would ever do that?

I'm really interested in this guitar, and the owner seems very helpful and good to me!

Sure doesn't look right. I would call bull shit on that one and walk away.

It's been done before - there's a couple of 6-string PC Archtops that have factory installed Ibanez Edge trems. And I think there's another 7 string with one too, so I'd say it's OK.

It is an Ibanez lo pro edge 7. He said that the OFR wasn't possible to have in a 7-string back in 1998. I have no idea on that one. If I'd want to change it to an OFR myself, The hole in the body should fit för it, right?

        Thanks for your comments.

Hope it fits cause this with an OFR would be one of most badass 7-strings I have ever seen !

Wasn't this on ebay a while back? I was dubious about the Edge tremolo. That pic looks a bit blurry. Can you check if it has a serial stamped into the fretboard at the 24th fret? You could always call Jackson/FMIC asking if its legit.

I wouldn't worry about changing the tremelo, but in the top pic it looks like the strings aren't lined up well on the fretboard, like they are at an angle somewhat (happens often enough for some baffling reason). Could be the angle of the pic but i would check that out.

This is what I can do for the moment, I'll try do find a picture of the serial on the guitar itself.

I have no idea if it was on ebay.

                thanks!

EDIT: Theres not marking at all on the fretboard. The serial is probably just on the back of the guitar on the steel plate at the neck/body meeting.

Ill try to get a photo of it.

My question may seem strange: what's wrong with the Ibanez tremolo? For me, these are among the best out there.

I have no problem with it i think. Was a long time since I used them, but as far as I remember, they're doing its job! The reason I wonder it's because I thought it sounded weird that Jackson would use Ibanez parts on their own guitars. Maybe Floyd Rose didn't make 7-string tremolos back then, I dunno! Trying to search the OFR history now, but its hard finding relevant info.

My understanding was early in the 7 string days Ibby was the only company making 7 string floyd style trems so if you wanted 7 strings and a "floyd" it was your only choice.

As far as anything else or claims such as "150 year old mahogany", "Only one of this type to ever be made", "Charlie Parker states this is the best guitar ever made. 'It swings baby!'" I feel they are pretty dubious.

There are definitely some weird things about the guitar, but that's the tough part about customs...non standard specs are sort of the idea. The strap position on the upper horn is not standard, nor would be the bolt on neck. However, I believe it was pretty common a while back for people to send different pickups and bridges to the custom shop to be installed on Jackson guitars.

I would say that since the hang tag exists, it's probably a good sign that it's legit. But obviously, anything can be faked.

Back in -98 only 7 string floyds available were Ibanez edges or Takeuchi licensed ones. Ibanez trem is way better than Takeuchi.

                            Alright, thanks!

Actually i've found a thread at another forum where the very same guitar was being sold 4-5 years ago! I don't really know what price I can agree with, but the current owner has put it out for around 2.000 dollars. does that seem fair?

It's a legit Jackson and Kisonen is right, they put Ibanez trems on several of the early 7-strings because OFRs weren't available. You'll find threads on that guitar over on sevenstring.org.
