• Hearing problems

Hi, I have a question for you:

I am worried because when I play a concert, or just a rehearsal with my band, we need to play very loud. The drummer hits very strong the drums so I need to have a high volume to hear me, the bassist has the same problem. My problem is I don't want to get deaf. Is there any way (apart from lowering de volume, we have already try that) to protect your ears? I have tried cotton corks, but they just restrict the middle and high frequencies, so I can only hear the bass and the bass drum.

Thanks

Re: Hearing problems

your drug-store (is that the name? for medications and stuff...) should offer some good ear protection. they suit for musicians and even out the frequencies, so it's just a lowerage of volume, but the sound stays authentic.
at least here they do... asking is for free.

The best thing you can do is use headphone monitors. They limit the ambient noise and allow you to adjust the volume of what you're hearing. If you don't care that much about hearing everything totally accurately then get a pair of sonic ear plugs. They are a rubber earplug that's valved to limit dangerous db levels. I use them at the shooting range (my Glock 21 with MY loads will make your ears ring for three days!!!)

Remember what Ian Gillan said on "Made in Japan?" Something to the effect of: Can we just turn up everything louder than everything else?

Don't play with your hearing, dude, protect it. Old time rockers are suffering from not doing this. Everyone in the Who is deaf. I think Ted Nugent is too.

Remember what Bruce Dickinson said on "Live After Death?" Something to the effect of: I wanna go back home to England and go, Doctor, Long Beach fucked up my hearing for good!

WHAT?

Don't take chances with your ears man! I can hardly hear the high frequencies any more out of my right ear. This is due to being stage right most of the time and having that side my head towards my amp. It's not that bad to deal with except when recording or on mixdown I have to reverse the headphones from time to time to make sure I'm hearing every thing.
What's up with most rock drummers? no finese {sp.} where's Ron when you need him!
We keep trying to get our drummer to use dynamics and all he says is ..there's no volume knob on a set of drums ya know....pisses me off!
SORRY! anyhow take care of your ears

FUCKING EARPLUGS, DAMMIT!

Cotton? Cotton against a fucking 20" china cymbal is like cardboard against a .45. Pretty fucking useless. Go to Guitar Center and buy some damn earplugs. They're about $10 for a pair of the good ones and they'll last FOREVER.

Whatever you get short of in-ear monitors is going to fuck up your hearing of some frequencies. DEAL WITH IT. It's either that, spring for some expensive-ass shit you don't really need, or go deaf.

Re: Hearing problems

I ALWAYS play with plugs, and have gotten used to the "muffled" sound. However, years ago I had a custom pair made. They take a mold of your ear, and then they custom fit a set to your ear canal. You can pop off filters with different dB ratings. The best thing about them - they attenuate all frequencies about the same amount, so you don't get that "clogged head" effect.
One prob - they cost about $100 to $150 a pair- and my drummers dog ate them - pulled them right off teh top of the amp !! So now I use "off-the shelf" foam plugs.
Anyway - you can get more info if you type H.E.A.R. or Hearing Education and Awareness for Rockers into a search engine. That may tell you where there are Ear Nose and Throat Specialists in your area who can do these plugs for you. Good luck!

Re: Hearing problems

Tell the drummer to get rid of that Pearl shit kit and get a damn Ludwig set so he doesn't have to pound the hell out of them to get a good tone.
And for God's sake, get him a book on tuning drums

I could stand right in front of my drummer's Ludwig "Eric Carr Tribute" kit he built (13 toms, 12 cymbals, 4 28"-long kicks - or longer? - mounted in two pairs over 2 feet long each), and did NOT need hearing protection, and we were STILL damn loud
It was about 100 yards from his bedroom/practice room to the street, and you could hear us as you pulled in the driveway

Good gear means good sound with less effort.

Re: Hearing problems

SONIC Ear plugs are less than $10 and most music stores carry them. My buds used to laugh their asses off at me for wearing them, but some of them are pretty
deaf now, and most now wear plugs too.

You can get by with swimmer's plugs that are sold in any drug store, they're only
a few bucks. They look sort of like the Sonics, but are solid with no baffle, so
you can't hear as well with them as with the Sonics, but they'll protect your ears
at least!
